I've Got a Reason

The ridiculous idea that I could move to Japan, get a job that pays adult wages, have a studio and make art making the center of my life again is seeming slightly less ridiculous these days. Pictured above is my studio overlooking Nagasaki harbour. It's pretty much in what you'd call downtown. I feel a bit more in the mix than I did when I just walked back and forth between work and home - both in residential neighbourhoods that are shut down after six o'clock. Now I also take the bus downtown almost every day!

Nailing down reliable places to buy wood, canvas, paint, etc. is turning out to be a challenge. Nagasaki has no real art supply store so I've turned to the internet. It's been hit or miss in terms of quality but I hope I'll find that one decent place and stock up.

I hope to have an artist site up soon (no really) to show off what I've been doing, which is nothing worth showing so far. If you are keeping track, that will make a forth semi-neglected website. A mini internet empire of procrastination.

  2. I have always been a big fan! Can't wait to see your new work. On another note, as I remember in art school, back in the '90's, you did appropriation art way before it was cool. I am thinking of those cat paintings.

  3. PS. I love your blog! I have been reading about all the places you have lived in. Glad to see a mention of the camp in NY, but perhaps a post is needed? Nobody believes me when I talk of Summerhill. Starting with the unmarked VHS tapes and pregnant retired amuzement park horses.

  5. This is what it's all about, getting all the elements in place. The dayjob is a must, but you need a space, the right gear, a bit of time, then the ideas just flow, the mind is set free. That IS one phenomenal view. A real contrast with Laurier just off St-Urbain! I am currently working on setting up a similar space, though mine is right at home in the basement. Got some minor renos underway and plans to bring in some new gear. 2011 should be our year. We're back, baby, we're back!!!

  6. First, thanks for the kind words and welcome first time commentors.

Bibi, you're right. I was cool way before being cool was cool!

I'm already seeing positive results by way of a decrease in general frustration and time spent thinking about work while not at work. Exciting times!
